Voter registration open

Voter registration for the 2014 election will take place on November 9 and 10.

This is the opportunity for all South Africans eligible to vote to ensure that they register for the upcoming elections.

The IEC launched a voter campaign “I Vote South Africa”, in Midrand, recently.

Residents need to take along identification in the form of a green bar-coded ID book, a valid temporary identity certificate or the new smart card ID.

IEC’s electoral chief officer, Mosotho Moepa, said that, when presented at the voting station, the bar-code in the ID is scanned by the zip-zip machine, which captures the person’s ID number and links it to the specific voting district where the person is registering.

“The zip-zip machine then prints a bar-code sticker, confirming the date, time and voting district where the person registered, which is tuck into the person’s ID book or onto the TIC as proof of registration,” said Moepa.

Since there is no place in the smart card to stick the bar-code sticker, voters will be given a printout which they can take with them and keep in a safe place.

An SMS has been made available to eligible voters to check their registration details via cellphone.

Voters need only send their ID number to 32810 and they will receive confirmation of their registration details.

For any queries, dial 0800 118000 toll free, from a land line, between 8am and 5pm.

The IEC is hopeful of registering two million new voters ahead of the national and provincial elections scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2014, bring the total number of registered voters to 25 million, or 80 per cent of eligible voters.
