Plenty happening at Northmead Mall

Northmead Mall has been a central part of the lives of local residents for over 30 years and, as a fully enclosed mall, it has also continuously provided shoppers with a convenient – and dry – place to shop during the Highveld’s rainy season.

Located on First Avenue, close to the airport and just half a kilometre from the Snake Road main arterial, Northmead Mall services the immediate communities of Northmead, Rynfield, Farrarmere and Airfield, while providing a central service hub to the greater Ekurhuleni region at large.

The centre was built by Anglo American in the 1970s, and lays claim to being one of the first malls to be built in Benoni.

It was purchased by One Property Holdings in conjunction with Capstone, in 2011, and is currently nearing the end of an extensive refurbishment that will see its dark interiors and dated design transformed into a modern, light, bright, contemporary retail environment that reflects modern innovations, trends, and ergonomics.

New and Improved

According to Chris van Reenen, CEO of OPH: “Convenience, choice and value for money remain central to the Northmead Mall offering.

“However, the overall modernisation of the site and improvements to the public areas, lifts, and walkways, toilets and parking facilities, tenant mix and retail offering mean that shoppers can now look forward to an even more enjoyable shopping experience than ever”.

The first phase of the refurbishment, representing an investment of close on R30-million, will be completed by November 2013, while a second phase, focusing on the introduction of additional parking facilities and a centralised Food Court, will commence early next year.

The centre, which is anchored by Pick n Pay, has already welcomed a host of exciting new stores, including Rage Shoes, Jam Clothing, Christian Connexion Bookshop and Vodashop.

The next three months will see yet more tenant changes, with the addition of the following fine stores: Hi-Me Intimate, Biltong Huys, Creative Minds, Cell Clinix, Sausage Saloon, Fashion Accessories, Auto Crew Bosch and Donayla’s Hair Salon.

In addition, several existing stores have relocated to larger premises within the centre, and carried out their own extensive refurbishments to meet and match the exacting standards set by OPH.

These include the enlarged, new generation Mr Price, significant modifications to Pick n Pay and Pick n Pay Liquor, Paddington’s Stationers, Ackerman’s, Pep and Clicks.

The food and beverage offering at Northmead Mall has also been given a boost, with the addition of Old Fashioned Fish & Chips, Biltong Guys and Sausage Saloon. OPH also hopes to introduce a vibrant coffee shop to the mix, and is currently in discussion with various operators.

A full scale Food Court is on the cards as part of phase two of the refurbishment, commencing early next year.

The changes to the mall have been significant and yet, at its heart, Northmead Mall remains a true centre of and for the community, committed to serving local shoppers and delivering choice, quality, and convenience.

The centre remains easily accessible via public and private transport, there’s loads of free undercover parking, and stores are open seven days, from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; 9am till 3pm on Saturdays; 9am till 2pm on Sundays, and 9am till 4pm on public holidays.

For your added convenience, Pick n Pay trades from 8am to 7pm Mon to Friday, till 6pm on Saturdays, and till 5pm on Sundays.

To mark the end of the refurbishment process, and to thank shoppers for their patience and ongoing loyalty, Northmead Mall will be running an exciting Spend and Win Competition during October, November, and December, whereby one luck shopper per month will stand a chance to win a whopping R10 000 in gift vouchers.
