Petition to address water pressure

A petition to address weak water pressure is circulating in Fairleads and surrounding areas, with the petition expected to appear before the September council meeting.

Clr Refiloe Ntsekhe will submit the petitions on behalf of affected Ward 24 residents.

She said she has received complaints from residents in her ward regarding weak water pressure since she became a councillor in 2011.

‘‘Most complaints are that residents find themselves having to jump around in the shower especially in the morning,’’ said Ntsekhe.

‘‘I am still receiving such complaints!’’

According to Fairleads resident Ronnie Teleng, who initiated the petition, there are already a large number of signatures on the petition.

Teleng said weak water pressure has been a problem in Fairleads for about eight years, with many residents resorting to installing water pressure pumps on their properties to alleviate the problem.

The City Times reported on the weak water pressure affecting Fairleads and the Country View and Boat Lake Village housing enclosures on August 30.

Although Boat Lake Village resident Ernest Edwards complained of the weak water pressure in the article on August 30, he said his water pressure has now dramatically improved.

The City Times has since received complaints about water pressure problems in Rynfield, Northmead and MacKenzie Park.

Rynfield resident Sharron Lamprecht said she has experienced water pressure problems since the council installed a new water metre on her property about a year ago.

‘‘It is a major, major problem,’’ said Lamprecht.

‘‘I have lived in my house for 15 years, and have never had a water problem.

‘‘Now it is a major problem – I cannot flush the toilet and run a bath at the same time.’’

She said simple tasks such as watering the garden and having more than one person shower at the same time in the house have become difficult.

Anyone who lives in Ward 24 and would like to sign the petition can email Teleng on ronnieteleng@me.com.

Ward 24 includes; Jatniël, Rynfield Agricultural Holdings, parts of Rynfield, Fairleads, Crystal Park, Norton’s Home Estates, Benoni North Agricultural Holdings, Van Ryn Small Holdings, Chief Albert Luthuli Park, Cloverdene and Boat Lake Village.

Ekurhuleni said in a statement on September 1 that there are ongoing water projects in line with the network upgrade master plan.

They did not responded to follow up questions at the time of going to print regarding the cause of the weak water pressure and when normal levels will be restored.
