Cycling for Apricot Tree

Apricot Tree, a Northmead-based stimulation centre for children with special needs, is appealing to Benoni residents to ride for them during 94.7 Momentum Cycle Challenge - Ride for a Purpose on November 17.

Over 20 000 cyclists are expected to complete the 94.7 kilometres course in and around Johannesburg.

The ride for a purpose challenge is when cyclists ride for the charity of their choice, to make a difference.

Apricot Tree was initially established three years ago in a double garage by parents who needed a place for their children with special needs.

It currently has 19 children between the ages of three and 19, but it accommodates people up to 23 years.

It has three teachers and 10 supporting staff members.

The centre currently runs on funds from a few sponsors and the parents.

According to head co-ordinator Eloise du Plessis their long term goal is to expand their premises, so they can accommodate more children.

“We currently can’t accommodate more children, because our centre focuses more on quality than quantity.

“All our children need one to one interaction from the teachers that is another reason we can’t currently expand,” added Du Plessis.

Another long term goal is setting up a residential area for people over the age of 23, who can’t be accommodated at the centre.

Du Plessis added that, the children are not grouped according to age; they are grouped according to functionality.

The children at the centre also get speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy during the day.
