Celebrating spring in the garden

The Friends of Benoni Library organisation hosted their annual Spring Garden fund-raiser on Thursday, September 6.

It was held in committee member Lucille Barrenger’s garden and guests were entertained with a talk on herbs by horticulturalist Katinka Joubert.

Joubert covered aspects on the subject in connection with home, cosmetic, medical and kitchen use.

“Lavender attracts butterflies to the garden and keeps moths away,” and “rosemary keeps mosquitoes away,” were part of her lecture.

The funds raised on the day will go to towards book purchases for the Benoni Library.

Elmine Mudge, who is in charge of the children’s section of the library, said the library does not always have sufficient funds to regularly update their books.

“The Friends have been hosting fund-raisers for three years and it really helps the library a lot,” she added.

The function was well attended and guests enjoyed lunch after the talk.

Members of the public who would like to donate books can do so at the Benoni Library at the Benoni Civic Centre on Elston Avenue or contact chairwoman of the Friends of Benoni Library Ann Smith on 011 425 4102.
