Dog abandoned for three weeks

A man took it upon himself to feed his neighbour's Labrador after the dog's owners apparently left the animal without food and water for approximately three weeks.

Cliff Williams, a Western Extension resident, said he started feeding the “magnificent dog” and gave it water when he saw it was not receiving either.

‘‘I felt sorry for the dog and gave him water through the fence,’’ said Williams.

He lowered a bucket and tied it to the boundary fence and fed the dog with food supplied by the SPCA.

Williams said he notified the Benoni SPCA of the dog’s abandonment about a month ago.

The canine was removed from the property on September 6, and is being housed at the SPCA.

Senior inspector at the Benoni SPCA Annalise Jungmann said the SPCA has to follow legal channels before they can intervene and remove an animal from a property.

She said each circumstance is different and that a warrant is needed before they can legally enter a property and remove an animal.

Jungmann said the dog’s condition was assessed twice a day with trips to the property in Victoria Avenue.

She said it is common for dogs to be abandoned by their owners, especially at the end the year.

She warned that people can be charged for abandoning their animals.

People who no longer want their animals can take them to the SPCA, rather than abandoning them.

The organisation will not turn people away from the SPCA or charge a fee.

People who have knowledge of abandoned animals can contact the Benoni SPCA on 011 894 2814/5.
