Youngsters raise funds for SPCA outreach

Seven Grade seven learners of Arbor Primary School have exceeded expectations with their Life Orientation project, in which they had to commit an act of community service.

Dylan Curtis, Gianpaulo Lo Guidice, James Waters, Nirad Pooran, Ashlynne Crawford, Claudio Abelho and Jacqueline Van Der Hooven, recently set up a table at Oakfields Shopping Centre, promoting the Benoni SPCA and animal protection.

They sold raffle tickets, which the public could buy to stand a chance to win prizes composed by several sponsors that these learners approached.

They also had a trolley next to their table in which people could donate dog or cat food.

Diane Wooldridge, chairwoman of the Benoni SPCA, said that the children were prepared by their surroundings to not expect too much from the public as the economy is at difficult times.

Dylan’s mother, Lisa Howitt told the City Times that their teacher encouraged them to raise R5 00.

Nonetheless all in all together they have raised R6 810 and 100kg of pet food.

“My whole car was full of dog and cat food,” said Wooldridge.

She added that she was impressed by their enthusiasm and hopes that this encourages other youngsters to follow in their footsteps in lending a helping hand in their communities.

The funds raised will go towards the Benoni SPCA’s outreach programme in Daveyton.
