Teen fit to stand murder trial

A 14-year-old Etwatwa boy, accused of butchering four members of his family with an axe, has been found fit to stand trial.

He appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on August 20, where the proceedings were held in camera.

The teen previously appeared in the same court on June 12, when he was sent to Sterkfontein Mental Hospital for psychiatric evaluation and declared fit to face the charges.

Prosecutor December Mthimunye said that the case has been postponed to September 26, for further investigation, to get the postmortem results of the accused’s granny, who died on June 28, and to afford the state time to assess its two minor witnesses.

The boy attacked his family at midnight on Friday, May 24, killing his mother and two siblings, and critically injuring his grandmother.

Police believed the attack to be a satanic ritual.

The boy now faces four murder charges and will remain at a place of safety until his next appearance.
