The art of landscaping

Sandra Jacobi gave a talk on “Bright ideas in landscaping”, at the Horticultural Society meeting, on August 17.

“Before you start changing your garden, you must have the time to maintain it after it has been revamped,” she said.

She advised new gardeners to keep it simple and not to get too ambitious when starting off.

“Don’t walk into a nursery and just load stuff into your trolley, you first have to have an idea and plan in mind,” she said.

Jacobi added that planning the climate and budget are two important things to consider.

The driveway into the yard is the most important, because it’s the first thing your visitors see and first impressions matter most.

If you have a narrow driveway, instead of putting flowers on the side put creepers or climbers on the wall.

According to Jacobi, preparing your garden is essential and replenishing the soil every six months is a must.

She added that, during the winter, people should plant red, yellow and orange flowers, and, during the summer, they should opt for blue or purple coloured flowers.

She compared landscaping to building a house, from the roof down.

Roof: trees and large shrubs.

Walls: climbers, shrubs and creepers.

Furniture: the entire feature such as flowers, benches, bridges and a water feature.

Floor: pebbles, gravel and the grass.
