Not all waste collected

Ekurhuleni’s roll-out of the 240lt waste bins in Wattville and Actonville is still on-going, and a complaint has surfaced that waste is not removed in these areas if it is not in the new bins, despite the continuing roll-out.

Earlier this year, Ekurhuleni said the roll-out would be completed by the end of June, after the council procured 64 800 240lt bins in May, for Wattville, Actonville and parts of Brakpan.

An anonymous complaint was sent to the City Times on July 9, saying refuse bags were not being removed if waste was not placed in the new bins.

The person went on to say that waste services were dumping refuse along with the bins, if it was not in the 240lt bins.

The City Times asked Ekurhuleni whether waste was being removed if it was not in the 240litre bins.

‘‘The municipality is currently embarking on an education and awareness programme, in line with the roll-out, to emphasis the importance of utilisation of containers versus plastic bags,’’ said Ekurhuleni acting media relations unit manager Sam Modiba.

‘‘The second phase of the programme will entail the enforcement component where communities will be obliged to utilise only containers.’’

Ward 29’s Clr Imtiaz Loonat said he has spoken to the waste department, to notify them that not all waste is being removed.

He said as far as he is aware all the waste in Actonville and Wattville is now being collected.

Gary Scallan, PR councillor for ward 29, said all waste should be removed.

‘‘Waste is waste and all waste should be collected regardless,’’ he said.

‘‘I have heard that bins were left uncollected for more than two weeks.

‘‘Residents have also commented that the entire refuse removal cycle is taking longer, as the truck lifting two bins at a time is much slower than the physical lifting of the plastic bags.’’

He said there have been cases of people’s bins being stolen or sold for a profit to people without bins.
