Bullet proof vest saves cop’s life

A bullet proof vest helped to save the life of a Benoni police officer on July 16.

The officer was on patrol duty at around 7pm, when the incident occurred.

Police spokesman Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the officer was shot at by unknown occupants of a white BMW.

He was driving with his colleagues on Kimbolton Street when they were flagged down by a man in a Mercedes Benz, who had pulled over on the side of the road.

Sekele said the officer climbed out of the vehicle to speak to the man and, while he was talking to him, the occupants of the BMW, which was parked not far from the Benz, fired one shot, hitting him in the chest.

The officer did not sustain any injuries, but was taken to The Life Glynnwood Hospital to be checked out.

The man who flagged down the police claimed the occupants of the BMW were trying hijack him.

No one has been arrested and police are investigating.
