Stop hitchhiking to Mpumalanga

The Daveyton police are warning residents in the area to stop hitchhiking to Mpumalanga.

This is aimed at people soliciting cheaper rides along the N12 Highway, behind the Daveyton Railway Station.

“Criminals are now targeting this area,” warned police spokesman Capt Alfred Nakana.

Nakana said incidents of rape, murder and robbery have been reported in the area.

“We urged people to go to the taxi rank and board taxis rather than risking their lives by hitchhiking from the dangerous spot,” he added.

According to Nakana, the reason given for hitchhiking is that people say they have to travel all the way to Johannesburg to catch taxis to Mpumalanga, and that this is costing them a lot of money.

The area behind the station is also dangerous because of the overgrown weeds in which criminals hide.
