Five clubs attend District Governor’s visit

Five local Rotary clubs, including all three Benoni branches, were represented at a visit by the Rotary District Governor (DG), on September 14.

The visit by Grant Daly (DG) and his wife, Nadine (DG Ann), was hosted by the Rotary Club of Benoni, at the Benoni Country Club.

Members of the Rotary clubs of Benoni, Benoni Van Ryn, Benoni Aurora, Boksburg and Boksburg Lake were present.

Daly touched on several subjects pertaining to the international organisation.

“Membership in the district has declined; to counter this, we have to look at the social health of our clubs and we need new clubs in areas where Rotary is not represented,” Daly said.

“We have to embrace programmes aimed at bringing more youth into Rotary.

“Additionally, we have to develop leaders within our clubs, in order to remain dynamic.”

Daly announced that the eradication of polio, a global project spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is nearing completion.

He further elaborated on the relevance of six areas on which Rotary must focus:

•Providing clean water and sanitation across the world

•Promoting peace in war zones: “Which we see in South Africa in the shape of university protests and service delivery issues”

•Strengthening communities through basic education

•Ensuring the health of mothers and children, especially during and after pregnancy

•Fighting diseases, such as HIV/Aids and tuberculosis

•Growing local economies in poverty-stricken areas.

In addition to Daly’s visit, the Rotary clubs of Benoni and Benoni Aurora inducted two and three new members, respectively.
