The ceremony was held at the Benoni Country Club in Morehill on February 24.
This is the most esteemed event on the Rotary calendar, with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award acknowledging recipients’ extraordinary service to the community.
The following individuals were recognised on the evening:
Denis Brandjes, for his work in schools across Africa, including the John Wesley Community Centre, Zama Montessori and Petit High School, among others. “Rotary has given me wings to live my passion of giving,” Brandjes said.
Allan Traube, founder of the White House Healing Centre in Western Extension. Traube is a former Rotarian who retired from the club to focus on his charitable project.
Dr Leon Stander was recognised for his work as a neurologist, being involved at schools for children with disabilities, such as the Muriel Brand School in Brakpan.
Lindsey Rule was praised for her 30 years of service to the community, mostly at schools in the East Rand. Rule’s most recent accomplishment is the founding and management of the Benoni Nursery School in Farrarmere Gardens.
Norman Vilakazi received the Special Service Above Self Award for his work in providing necessities for impoverished people on the East Rand. He partnered with Unilever to provide toiletries and food at schools and old-age homes.
The evening celebrated both the accomplishments of the award winners and the 111th birthday of Rotary.
