Sibikwa open day

“Anyone interested in joining the Saturday Arts Academy is invited to come along, to find out more about the classes,” said Michael Mabena, from Sibikwa.

Teachers will be available on the day, to assist and answer any questions people might have about the academy.

Senior learners, from 14 years to 24 years ,will be allowed to audition on February 7, in order to assess their talent.

Sibikwa is located on Liverpool Road, and offers classes in dance, drama, African music and visual arts, for youngsters between the ages of six and 24 years.

The academy was established in 1995 and seeks to equip young people with arts knowledge.

“We also seek to provide training in leadership skills and interpersonal skills,” Mabena said.

”Educators have observed that learners attending the Saturday Arts Academy show a marked improvement in literacy, communicate more effectively and are able to focus and concentrate on the school task at hand.

“Each year, learners enter into exams run and recognised by national institutions, such as the Speech and Drama College South Africa for Drama.

“Sibikwa strives for excellence and limits classes to a maximum of 23 people.

”We focus on quality teaching and individual attention, therefore there are a limited number of spaces available at the academy.”

This year primary school children from Etwatwa, Daveyton and Kingsway will be transported to and from Sibikwa each Saturday.

Classes will begin on February 2 and end with the closing concert and graduation ceremony on December 6.

The academy follows the Gauteng schools calendar.

“Classes for primary school learners will take place from 8.45am till 1.30pm and, for senior learners, the classes will run from 8.45am till 5pm. each Saturday,”said Mabena.
