The Corner Flag: Benonians aren’t race poopers

The race starts at 19:00 and will take place on the streets of Northmead and Rynfield.

Mornings are when I am at my most productive, which is why I prefer coming to the office early to enjoy the quietness and get the most important tasks out of the way before the bustle starts.

Last Friday, I started the day normally but once my colleague Jani, arrived, the conversations started flowing.

She excitedly told me about how her friend, Brenda, was looking forward to doing some good by assisting with the organisation of the 5km leg of the Tommy Malone Memorial Road Race, at Boksburg City Stadium on Sunday.

She also shared a conversation she heard about a Parkrand resident who vented on the community group about the race, saying if he had known a road race would disrupt his peace on a Sunday morning, he would not have bought his property 25 years ago.

In response, another member chirped in, saying that it is a brief inconvenience and instead of moaning, residents should take a leaf out of Benoni’s book by lining their driveways on race day to support the runners.

The respondent said the community spirit shown by Benonians, especially during the Benoni Northerns Night Race, is commendable as they embrace such events with vigour and enthusiasm.

I take my bucket hat off for this person because real recognises real.

Without a doubt Benonians are special people. You are an inspiration to many and your spirit of community is second to none.

I’ve covered the past two editions of the Night Race.

The first time in 2022, I had doubts it would succeed because I had never heard of night races in South Africa.

I ate my humble pie when I arrived at the Benoni Northerns Sports Club and saw the hundreds of runners dressed in their colourful clothing.

I soon realised that it was a community affair that accommodated runners and walkers of all fitness levels.
It was awash with colour and costumes and the vibe was infectious.

It warmed my heart seeing children and their parents with their headlamps, on their driveways cheering on the runners, while others manned the water stops with soft music and lights along the route.

Nothing exemplifies the spirit of community than this.

So, on October 23, don’t be like this Parkrand resident who was outdone by Jani’s cross-breed TAG pup, Maggie, whose peace wasn’t disturbed at all.

In fact, Maggie, watched the Tommy Malone Race from the windowsill.

Do as you have always done and support Benoni’s most loved night race.

Last year, the women’s 10km record fell when Simonay Weitz clocked 37:08 to beat Kate van Jaarsveld’s previous mark by 02:02.

The men’s mark of 31:00 is still standing after Donald Mashamaite fell 26 seconds short of taking it. Will it finally be broken this year?

Don’t miss out.

We will be there and we hope to see you in your best costumes.
