Farramere resident conquers Kilimanjaro for cancer awareness

His foundation donated R15 000 to two of their beneficiaries, Thandanani Centre (mental wellness) and Beacon of Care (a cancer organisation).

Merging adventure with advocacy in a breathtaking setting, Benoni resident Nolan Pillay went under the hair clippers in aid of cancer patients at the summit of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.

This bold move was a tribute to cancer patients and those who have died from the disease.

The Farramere resident, along with Sivan Schafer of Benoni and Denise Sagathavan of Phoenix, embarked on a journey to summit Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on August 31 to raise funds and awareness for cancer.

Sivan Schafer from the East Side Barbers shaved Nolan Pillay’s hair at the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Pillay, a transformational coach and founder of the Be The Best Version of Yourself Foundation, summitted Mount Kilimanjaro for the third time since 2019.

“This climb was a personal challenge for me, but with the support of an incredible team, we pushed through. Our causes for cancer awareness, mental wellness, and the Skills Village have been blessed.

“When we lost one of our climbers, Reesha, also diagnosed with cancer, our why became much bigger. We dedicated this summit to her, and I felt her presence every step of the way.”

Nolan Pillay and Sivan Schafer of Benoni summitted Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on August 31.

East Side Barbers based in Benoni, was the key partner of the Be The Best Version of Yourself Foundation for this year’s Climb4Cancer, Climb4MentalWellness, and Climb4SkillsVillage causes.

“Schafer from East Side Barbers was the one who suggested we shave our heads at the peak of the climb in an act that may be unprecedented at such high altitudes and extreme cold.

“To everyone who supported us, whether on the mountain or from afar, thank you for believing in our mission.

“Together, we are reaching new heights and creating a future filled with hope, resilience, and opportunity.”

Nolan Pillay expressed excitement about summitting Mount Kilimanjaro successfully again this year.

Pillay said his foundation is seeking funding to launch its Skills Village, which aims to help youth and create employment opportunities.
