City suspends EMPD chief amid sexual misconduct allegations

An independent investigator has been appointed to look into this ’serious’ allegation against the top cop.

The CoE has placed EMPD chief Isaac Mapiyeye on precautionary suspension following sexual misconduct allegations levelled against him by a staff member.

The female EMPD employee (name withheld for her protection) had reported the sexual harassment and intimidation and narrated the events to the city manager’s office.

According to the metro, Mapiyeye was served with the letter of his suspension yesterday (September 25).

“At a special council meeting held early this month, the council authorised the city manager (Dr Imogen Mashazi) to follow procedures in line, among others, with the Local Government Disciplinary Regulations for Senior Managers on the disciplinary procedures against senior managers, as well as the Systems of Delegations and relevant CoE policies in dealing with the matter,” explained metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

The council further authorised the city manager to appoint an independent investigator to investigate these allegations that the council ‘deemed to be serious in nature’.

“Upon the appointment of the independent investigator, the accounting officer is to submit the report to council of the latter and findings against the chief of police within 30 days of his appointment, the council resolved.”
