SPCA needs funds for rabies shots

September 28 is World Rabies Day.

The Benoni SPCA is appealing to the public for assistance as it prepares to host a massive vaccination outreach event on September 28.

The society plans to vaccinate as many dogs from the disadvantaged areas in Benoni on the day, but it needs funds.

According to Benoni SPCA manager Jacques Cronje, they do not have the funds to buy the vaccine.

“For as little as R300, we can vaccinate about five dogs. Rabies is no joke and entirely avoidable if an animal has received its vaccinations. While it is preventable and even treatable, it must be caught early. Once the symptoms of rabies appear, the virus is fatal.

“Paralysis eventually sets in, and the rabid animal might be unable to eat and drink. Unfortunately, there is only one way to test for rabies in animals, and that test requires the animal’s death so its brain can be tested,” said Cronje.

The public is encouraged to donate.

• Seizures;
• Paralysis;
• A dropped jaw;
• Unusual shyness or aggression;
• Excessive salivation or frothy saliva; and
