UPDATE: Voortrekker Road bridge accident victim discharged from hospital

The 26-year-old doesn’t remember certain things about her life or the accident.

After spending a month in hospital, Nolwazi Mgweba (26) has been discharged and is recuperating at home.

She was discharged on July 22 from Tambo Memorial Hospital after sustaining serious injuries during a freak accident on the Voortrekker Road bridge on June 28.

Mgweba and her friend, Mbali Nkosi, were caught in a high-speed chase between private security companies, police and robbery suspects who were driving a white Audi Q5, while traveling back to their workplace in Northmead that day, just after 14:00.

During the chase, the driver of the Audi lost control and collided head-on with an oncoming maroon Toyota Corolla, which Mbali was driving.

Nolwazi’s sister, Lizeka, said she is recovering well, however, she doesn’t remember certain things about her life or the accident.

“While she was still in hospital she remembered our names but failed to understand how we were related to her. When she was discharged, her memory improved because she then understood that we were her family. Due to her slow memory progress, she tends to repeat herself sometimes and get frustrated due to her inability to do things for herself.”

Lizeka said they try to remind her about her past so that she can regain her memory.

“Every month she sees doctors at Tambo Memorial Hospital who assess her body. She eats soft foods because her teeth are still sensitive. She also attends physio to assist her to walk as she currently uses a walker. She regularly has pain in her legs and ankle.”

Nolwazi is reportedly still fully dependent on her family as she still battles to bathe or dress herself.

“Nolwazi’s health has taken a toll on our finances because we need to take her to hospital every month. Due to her condition, we use Uber which is more expensive than public transport.

“She now eats certain prescribed foods such as breakfast cereals, milk, Alkaline water, fish, and other dairy foods.

We appeal for help from anyone who would like to assist us with anything,” said Lizeka.

Anyone who can assist the Mgweba family may contact Lizeka on 065 348 4563.

The Benoni City Times is awaiting comment from police.
