Uncle receives life imprisonment

The child’s mother told the police that before the incident, her brother uttered some disturbing words that he must strangle her son.

The Benoni Magistrate’s Court recently sentenced Relebogile Mofokeng (27) of Daveyton to life imprisonment for brutally killing his two-year-old nephew last year.

Mofokeng reportedly confessed to strangling and killing his nephew after an axe with blood stains was discovered inside his shack.

According to Ekurhuleni SAPS spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, last May, police officers received a call from the Daveyton Main Clinic, and upon arrival, they found the body of the child.

Sekgobela said the mother of the child told police that earlier that day, she visited her mother, who was not feeling well. It is reported that her aunt and brother, who is a drug addict, were present at home.

“The woman said while she was inside the house, her two-year-old played outside in the yard. Apparently, the child went to his uncle’s shack, and when he came out, his mouth had white substances.

“The child was asked by his mother what was inside his mouth, and he said it was a chilli. The mom wiped her son’s tongue with a cloth, and her brother brought a cup of water and gave it to the two-year-old to drink.”

Sekgobela said the mother then left the child at her home and proceeded to her residence. It is reported that on her way to her house, she remembered she had forgotten a tablecloth at her mother’s place and immediately went back.

“On arrival, she found her son lying unresponsive on the ground. Blood came out of his nostril, and he had bruises on his neck and cheek. The child was taken to the Daveyton Main Clinic, where he was certified dead.”

The mother told the police that a few weeks back, her brother uttered some disturbing words that he must strangle her son. However, when asked what he meant, he did not respond.

A case of murder was opened at the Daveyton SAPS and assigned to Detective Mpho Magwalu, who interrogated the brother. He confessed to murdering his nephew.
