Daveyton SAPS and Mayfield communities unite for Mandela Day

The 2024 Mandela Day theme was "combating poverty and inequality”.

In celebration of Mandela Day on July 18, the Daveyton police station, in collaboration with community organisations, orchestrated a heartwarming soup kitchen event.

The initiative was aimed at giving back to the community, particularly benefiting the elderly, the homeless and families facing financial hardships.

The event saw collaboration from various entities including the CPF, Memeza NGO, Majuteni Food Town Hyper, Daveyton Main Clinic, Naledi Bakery, and volunteers from Isixembe Community Development Projects.

According to the spokesperson for Daveyton SAPS Constable Ntando Ngomane, about 300 community members were provided with a meal in line with this year’s theme ‘Combating poverty and inequality”.

Romoitheki Madikgetla, chairperson of Daveyton CPF, said that Mandela Day symbolises a day of compassion and generosity towards those who are less fortunate.

Reflecting on the day’s activities, Mpho Shai, the SAPS presiding chaplain, said the police are serving the community every day, although Mandela Day provides a unique opportunity for them to serve differently.

A resident, Mayor Zwane, said he was grateful for the support.

“Days like this remind me that democracy is special because we now get to experience things that were only limited to certain people and certain areas,” he said.

The police then proceeded to the Theodorah Ndaba Victim Support Centre where they donated groceries and sanitary pads to homeless individuals and victims of gender-based violence.

Meanwhile, in Mayfield, organisations such as He is a Provider, HG Projects and Basize Bonke Foundation banded together to reach out to the needy as part of their efforts for Mandela Day.

They gathered at House of Glory International Fellowship Church where donations of warm meals supplied by Shoprite, clothing and essential supplies such tissues, soaps and sanitary pads were donated to locals.

Sizwe Mngomezulu from Basize Bonke Foundation described the 67 minutes spent in service as a moment of shared love and compassion, echoing the enduring impact of Mandela’s legacy.

Residents like Pat Kgabe expressed gratitude for such initiatives, adding that they should be more frequent to continue Mandela’s legacy of compassion and community support.
