Gas storage facility destroyed in blaze

Several explosions could be heard in the area around 17:33 as a result of gas bottles exploding.

A shack used as a gas storage facility in Etwatwa burnt down and destroyed a shack next to it on July 12.

Residents said several explosions could be heard in the area at around 17:30 as a result of gas bottles exploding.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi said when firefighters arrived at the site they found an LPG cylinder on the ground.

“Water was used to extinguish and cool off all hot spots. No casualties were recorded on the scene of the blaze,” said Ntladi.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that a person was allegedly recharging an empty LPG cylinder while smoking, which caused the fire.

He said no further damage was experienced after the arrival of firefighters.
