Rynfield man charged with animal cruelty after beating, strangling dog

The man who is out on bail has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Willem Lagrange (63) of Rynfield, who allegedly assaulted his pet Labrador with a belt and strangled it, will hear his fate when judgement is delivered in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on July 26.

Lagrange was arrested in September after the SPCA opened a case against him after obtaining video footage of the incident from a concerned member of the public.

He faces a charge of cruelty to animals, which he pleaded not guilty to, and is currently out on bail.

According to the charge sheet, on August 7, the accused beat the dog with a belt and strangled it.

During court proceedings on July 12, the magistrate dismissed the defence’s Section 174 application, which sought to argue that the matter be discharged as they believe that the video footage was altered with and not true.

The matter was postponed for judgement.
