Benoni crush East Rand United in action-packed match

Benoni Northerns Storm crushed East Rand United (ERU) 57-12.

The Benoni Northerns Storm first team started the second round of the Valke Merlin league on a good note by crushing East Rand United (ERU) 57-12 in Reiger Park on July 6.

Things looked positive for the home team in the first half of the game. The men from Reiger Park kicked over three penalties to get nine points on the scoreboard.

The visiting team, on the other hand, scored and converted a try, making the score 9-7 in favour of United when the whistle blew for half-time.

Flanker Keiryn Hill touches down twice for Benoni.

Benoni went up a gear in the second half, scoring eight more tries while ERU only managed to kick over another penalty.

The visitor’s open side flanker Keiryn Hill touched down twice.

Rohanne Botha, Jaen-Dre Duvenhage, Dorian Robertson, Shanden Mays, Reitze Lewis, Bruce Roets and Seetebosigo Mokhine also scored tries for the visitors.

Fly-half Bradin Anderson converted six of the tries.

United’s fly-half Cameron Rooi’s was responsible for nine of the home team’s points.
Outside centre Sphephelo Mtshali also kicked over a penalty for ERU.

The score is similar to the previous week’s game, where Benoni defeated United 21-7 at the Northerns main rugby field on June 29.

ERU secretary, Jims Davids, said some of the club’s key players could not play due to injuries and death in the family.

Lock Shanden Mays scores a try for Benoni.

“There has been improvement, but we are still facing a few challenges. The poor disciple from our team was a problem as we received two yellow cards,” he said.

Benoni’s vice chairperson Jaco Havenga said like the previous week, ERU stayed in the game until the second half.

“We have a good bench, and the fresh legs were too much to handle for United,” said Havenga.
