WATCH: Authorities march against drug use

Local authorities marched from Kingsway Road to the Modderbee Sports Grounds in Daveyton on June 21 to tackle the widespread substance abuse among youngsters.
Members of the EMPD, the Benoni SAPS, Modderbee Correctional Services, the Ekurhuleni Municipality and the Department of Social Development formed part of the officials who took to the streets to raise awareness.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele said the collaborative initiative marks a vital move forward in tackling the challenges substance abuse poses in communities and workplaces.
Sekele said the campaign aimed to highlight a shared commitment towards protecting the well-being and future of the community.
“We hope this partnership will grow and continue to make a difference. Next time, we will invite learners from various schools to also participate,” said Sekele.

According to the acting area commissioner at Modderbee Correctional Services, Salome Masuku, the event also served as a reminder to officers that it is all about the badge and they should not compromise their work by abusing substances.

Modderbee Correctional Services spokesperson Olivia Mothapo encouraged young people to have sober habits because they are the future.
The day ended with interdepartmental sports and games.
