Etwatwa Greening Team commemorates World Environmental Day

The theme of the 2024 World Environment Day is ‘Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience’.

The Etwatwa Greening team celebrated World Environment Day on June 7 at Praise Him Bible Church International.

The event was aimed at equipping young people to be environmental stewards and also focused on drowning awareness.

Speakers highlighted the importance of protecting the environment to foster economic development in the world.

Attendees included members of local community cleaning projects.

Zodwa Ndhlovu, manager of the Waste Minimisation and Prevention Programme in Ekurhuleni, urged parents to help restore nature to its normal state in order for children to be able to enjoy the outdoors without being harmed by UV rays and other harsh conditions associated with climate change.

Elton Mawasha, of Silindokuhle Primary, said environmental discussions offer encouragement to his learners since they are already involved in the school’s eco team, which teaches learners about protecting the environment and cleanliness.

The Department of Agriculture expressed their excitement at the initiatives, saying it is much needed that young people learn how to handle vegetation.

Etwatwa-Daveyton supervisor of Waste Management Thembisile Mjiako said, “Just look at the weather these days. Illegal dumping has long-term negative consequences. There is no justification for littering, and people have the right to report a stolen bin.”

Meanwhile, Miss Eco Teen South Africa Enhle Mdakane said that no country wants to reflect badly as being among the dirtiest. “This could be bad for tourism and investments. A nation’s cleanliness speaks for its state,” said Enhle.

Organiser of the event, Vusi Matladi of the Etwatwa Greening Team, said the event was a huge success. He thanked OXFAM for their contributions.

He encourages the public to continue to make a positive impact on the environment.
