Benoekie 2.0 cake sale a success

All that is left is crumbs and delicious memories.

The sale of the giant Benoekie 2.0, at the Benoni Beer and Gin Festival at Benoni Northerns Sports Club on June 1 was a resounding success.

Still beaming from the weekend’s festivities, owner of Rain Baking, Yolandi Palmer excitedly announced that sales of the sugar biscuit glazed in royal icing raised in excess of R18 000.

“The day was amazing and I could not have asked for a better outcome,” said the Westdene resident.

“Festival goers flocked to the Benoekie tent to get their hands on a serving, while others merely popped past to make a monetary donation.”

Bundling the remaining pieces of the Benoekie together, Yolandi says her spirits were lifted by those who supported the initiative.

“People had wonderful comments about the final product and their smiles were compliments of the taste,” she said.

“Supporters also took the time to learn more about the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), Stand Against Suicide and iKhaya da Luz Children’s Home, the three charities who will be benefitting from the funds raised.”

She further said that the creation of the biscuit which measured 5.4m by 3m, would not have been possible without the assistance of AfriForum Benoni Branch, George’s Bread & Co, K90 Centre, Oakfields Pick n Pay and organisers of the festival.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to yet another successful Benoekie,” she said.

“I believe that this initiative not only translated into much needed funds being raised for three worthy charity organisations, but also initiated a meaningful conversation about mental health as well as the protection and care of vulnerable children.”

With only 40kg of the Benoekie 2.0 remaining, Yolandi said portions will be handed to those less fortunate after which she intends to sip on a piping hot cup of coffee.
