Western Extension informal soccer pitch in the works

The forgotten veld on the corner of Mowbray Avenue and Kimbolton Street, Western Extension, could soon become a hot and happening diski (football) site.

Partnering with Homestead Helpers for Benoni, real estate agency KW Clockwork traded their real estate boards for gloves and rakes on May 9 in what is described as phase one of the rejuvenation of this open space.

While a tractor made work of taming the overgrown grass, Monica Caxucho, a coach for the company, said that as part of their social responsibility outreach project, they opted to join hands with the community-driven clean-up organisation to lay the foundation for creating a safe and sustainable space for youth in the area.

“It is common knowledge that drug abuse is rife throughout this part of the city,” said Jacqui Keel, one of the directors of Homestead Helpers for Benoni.

“Our vision is to transform this area into an informal soccer pitch where youngsters can engage in developmental football, thus providing them with a safe and conducive place to grow.

“We hope by offering them this space, they will be tempted away from the streets and substance abuse and, instead, use their talents positively.”

Caxucho added that their real estate company is about more than selling homes.

“We are invested in community upliftment and youth development. Once completed, I believe this park will become a place where fond childhood memories are created, budding talent is ignited, and choices for a better future are made.”
