City bids farewell to former mayor

“His spirit will forever roam the African bush, an untamed soul forever wild and free.”

Surrounded by the African bushveld where he found solace and inspiration, former Benoni mayor Leslie Graham Lancaster (68) drew his last breath on April 28.

Les, as he was fondly known by friends and family, served as mayor from 1990 to 1991 at the tender age of 30.

“My dad’s life was a colourful tapestry woven with threads of adventure, laughter and boundless love,” said Kerry-Lee Payne, Lancaster’s youngest daughter.

“Our parents’ 43 years of marriage and how they raised my sister, Farah Krohn, and me is a testament to the power of family and love.”

Les’ life journey can be described as one of remarkable diversity and service.

The former Westdene resident served with bravery and dedication as a member of the SAPS, after which he pursued a career in politics.

During his term as mayor, he adopted “reaching out” as his motto, inviting business people throughout the city to inclusive weekly meetings, with a focus on mentorship and idea sharing.

“Les left an indelible mark on every path he ventured,” said Kerry.

As the managing director of Noel Lancaster Sands, Les and his wife, Dale, bade their beloved town farewell in 2004, establishing themselves on the family farm, Mount Silic in Bronkhorstspruit, in the heart of the business’ operations.

“Les exemplified leadership and vision, guiding the company with a steady hand and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” Kerry said.

“He lived each day with a contagious enthusiasm, and his presence illuminated the lives of those around him. His mischievous spirit and zest for life were infectious, leaving a trail of laughter wherever he went. He was not just well-known, he was loved.”

A memorial service in his honour will be held on the family farm on May 10.

He is survived by his wife, daughters and grandson, Kian Payne.
