Wattville body parts in suitcase: accused to spend Christmas behind bars

The pair will reappear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on January 22, 2024.

The 53-year-old man found in possession of a suitcase containing body parts in Wattville last month will remain in custody after failing to pay bail during his recent appearance in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

His co-accused, Tatenda Mhlanga (33), abandoned her bail application on November 20.

The pair face charges of murder and violating a corpse.

They were arrested after crime prevention wardens noticed the pair pushing a suitcase that appeared heavy while patrolling near Roshini and Kohinor streets on November 11.

They were stopped, and when asked what was inside the purple suitcase, the man said it was a cow’s head. According to the police, after searching the suitcase, they found the mutilated body of a man inside.

Other body parts were discovered on the same day, about 30m from the scene.

Allegedly, the woman fled the scene. However, her sister handed her to the police on November 12.

The police said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was staying with his girlfriend, the 33-year-old female suspect [Mhlanga], in Actonville.

The male suspect, who lives on the same street as the woman, alleges she asked him to help her carry the bag.

They will reappear in court on January 22.
