EMPD confiscates fake and expired goods around Benoni CBD

EMPD communications officer Lerato Monyane said they are not only targeting Benoni but other areas as well.

A number of foreign-owned shops in the Benoni CBD were raided recently by members of the EMPD as part of their by-law enforcement duties.

Shops owned by foreign nationals have, in the past few weeks, come under scrutiny for their alleged involvement in selling expired food items.

According to the media liaison officer of EMPD, Lerato Monyane, approximately 180 items were confiscated including hair, washing, food, baby and cleaning products.

The raid comes after members of the Benoni Taxi Association (BTA) pointed out various outlets selling suspected expired goods.

“EMPD officers proceeded to the given addresses and consulted with environmental health practitioners, who granted them permission to confiscate expired goods in their absence. The products were taken to our office and later environmental health practitioners sent a waste department official to collect and dispose of them.”

Monyane said they are not only targeting Benoni but other areas as well.

“Blitz operations are not selective, they deal holistically with non-compliance hence every department is represented. Other areas such as Petit and Putfontein were also visited by law enforcement and operations are conducted throughout the City of Ekurhuleni,” said Monyane.
