Youngsters shine at inter-provincial tourney

The tournament began on October 20 with the play-offs for the various age-groups and concluded on October 22 after two tough days on the court.

Nicolas Franken and Tegan Brouwer braved the scorching heat as they laboured to clinch the U15 boys’ and girls’ titles at the Gauteng East Tennis Association (GETA) Closed Inter-Provincial schools trials on October 22 at the GETA complex in Lakefield.

Top seed Franken beat Caden Roodt 8-5 for the boys’ gold, while Brouwer made light work of third-seeded De Villiers to beat the GETA superstar 8-1.

Franken began his campaign on October 21 with an easy 8-1 victory against Wian Brown in his first match and brushed Keagan Crous aside with an 8-1 mauling in the last four.

Roodt also had an easy run to the final, beating Morgan Marè 8-2 in his first match and knocking out Nathan Wiggill with an 8-3 victory to set up a final against Franken.

Franken and Roodt will be joined by Brown, Crous, Marè, Wiggill and Tshepang Monama in the Gauteng East team that will represent the province in the next round of the competition.

Brouwer’s run to the final included victories against Jane du Preez (8-3) and Janine Ramiah (8-4), while De Villiers beat Leane Pienaar from Gauteng Central 8-4 and Alicia Adams 8-6 to march on to the final.

The U15 girls’ provincial top seven team comprises Brouwer, De Villers, Adams, Ramiah, Du Preez, Carmen Delport and Elen Odgers.

The group will form part of GETA’s core in the next round.

In the U13 final, Omphile Sekhute and Jessica-Sam du Plessis won the boys’ and girls’ trophies with wins over Marco d’Allesio and Sadi Adams.

Top-ranked Sekhute beat D’Allesio 8-2 in the boys’ final, while second-seeded Du Plessis got one over the top-seeded Adams with an 8-4 victory.
