Braai master walks away with R10k

The fun-filled event was in honour of Heritage Month.

Local braaiers battled it out at the braai master competition held at Meat World Boksburg at K90 Centre on September 23.

The fun-filled event, organised by Meat World Boksburg in partnership with Jacaranda FM and other stakeholders to celebrate SA’s heritage, saw four contestants braaiing various types of meat with each contestant showcasing their own flavour and braai style for the title of ultimate braai master.

As the grill-off went on, patrons of the centre and spectators were free to taste all the different types of braaied meat, hot off the various braai stations, and comment on the meat tastes.

Ultimately, the competition ended with one lucky contestant, Farida Anderson of Glen Marais in Kempton Park, walking away with the grand prize R10 000 in cash, after she was announced as the overall winner of the competition.

Mologadi Mogale came in second place and walked away with R5000, while Eddie Williams secured the third spot and walked away with R3000 in cash.

Six Gun Grill also handed out amazing prizes to the winners.

Winning feeling

We asked the elated Anderson, who erupted into laughter when she was announced as the winner, to describe how it feels to win the competition. She said she was unable to believe she had won because it was a tough competition.

“I’m so excited. It’s unbelievable that I actually won. I know my meat is good but I was not expecting this. I was expecting to come third or maybe second,” said Anderson.

Anderson pointed out that it was her first time entering a braai competition because every time she wanted to enter, her husband discouraged her saying her chances of winning are very slim.

“This time he is the one who helped me to enter this competition. Tonight I’m taking them out to celebrate and I will also spoil them.”

Braaing journey
Anderson said she has always been involved with food, and she gained all the grilling skills and techniques

through braaiing for her sister’s catering company.

“My sister owns a catering company so every time she has a function she does the decoration and I do the food. I always braai the meat and everybody likes it.”

Sharing her recipe, Anderson said: “I won’t lie to you, Crown Six Gun Grill seasoning does wonders. If you have Six

Gun you will never go wrong and with the chicken, I used picante sauce.”

The event was broadcast live on Jacaranda FM. While braaing, testing and judging were underway, DJ Mack and the Christiaan Band kept the crowd well entertained.

Children were treated to colourful face-painting, a photo booth, stilt walkers and balloons.

Meat World’s Gus Leitao and the Jacaranda team thanked everyone who joined the event and the contestants who took their time to participate.
