Flying squad recovers another pipe gun
The police need information to clamp down on homemade guns.
Routine operations led to the recovery of yet another homemade pipe gun in Brakpan.
According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the spokesperson for the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), a 28-year-old suspect was arrested on Kitzinger Street, Brakpan, on August 14, when they found him in possession of the firearm.
“On July 31, the same suspect was arrested on Goods Road. He was found in possession of a similar gun and drugs,” said Giblin.
“He was remanded in custody at the Brakpan Police Station but was released on bail after his appearance in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court.”
Giblin further stated that pipe guns were not rare phenomena and were often used by criminals because they were undetectable and untraceable.
“What is worrying is that we recovered two of these weapons in a spate of two weeks from the same suspect,” he said.
“Investigations into the matter have been intensified.”
Giblin said they were investigating possible links with a 47-year-old man arrested on August 8 on Victoria Street, Brakpan, after he was found in possession of two live rounds of 12-gauge shotgun ammunition.
“Pipe guns are fully functional firearms that can cause fatal injury,” he said.
“Officers are working closely with the local authorities to clamp down on the manufacturer of these weapons and to combat sale thereof.”
