Operations will continue in the fight against crime.

Routine operations by members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) led to the recovery of a handmade pipe gun.

Possession of drugs
• On July 31, BFS members arrested two men in Brakpan on charges of being in possession of drugs.

“At 17:30, officers arrested a 28-year-old man on High Road when he was found in possession of meth,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the spokesperson for the unit.

“A short while later, they arrested a 29-year-old man on the same charges, but following a personal search, he was found in possession of a pipe gun.

This 29-year-old man was arrested on High Road, Brakpan when he was found with drugs and a homemade pipe gun.

“They confiscated the firearm, and the suspects were remanded in custody at the Brakpan Police Station.”

• A 39-year-old man was arrested on Station Street, Brakpan, on August 4, when officers found Mandrax in his possession.

Possession of stolen engine
While patrolling the N12 highway at the Etwatwa off-ramp at 08:00 on August 1, officers flagged a Toyota minibus taxi with foreign registration plates.

Officers stopped and searched the vehicle and found it was transporting a vehicle engine.

“The driver alleged he was asked to transport the engine from Mozambique to SA but could not produce any valid documents,” said Giblin.

“He was arrested for contravening the Customs and Excise Act and possessing suspected stolen goods.”

A suspected stolen engine was recovered during routine stop-and-search operations by BFS members on the N12 highway.

Rapid Response Services (RRS) successes
From July 28 to August 3, RRS members comprising the Flying Squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol throughout Gauteng closed the net on 109 suspects while recovering 39 vehicles and 16 firearms.

Operations included vehicle checkpoints and intensive patrols, which saw 45 suspects booked on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen goods, fraud, outstanding warrant of arrest, business robbery, attempted murder, pointing of a firearm and robbery.

“They arrested seven suspects on charges of being in possession of vehicles that were reported as stolen or hijacked,” said Giblin.

“A further 20 suspects were arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearms.”

Officers arrested 37 suspects after finding them with heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and meth. They confiscated the drugs.
