Birthday wishes continued to flood in for ‘Nomi’ and Flommie Magopane of Kids Haven on July 18 because they shared their birthdays with the late Nelson Mandela.
While community members heeded the national call for community service, dedicating 67 minutes of their time, ‘Nomi’, a beneficiary and Magopane, a driver, were happy to add a digit to their ages.
Protecting her identity, Nomi is not her real name. She celebrated her 10th birthday, while Magopane turned 58.
The 10-year-old said she found her birthday a bit more special than other birthdays because she shared it with Madiba, the late father of the nation.
Magopane said he shared the day with Madiba and his late father, Richard Magopane, who died in 1985.
Recalling his fondest memories while growing up, Magopane said he always looked forward to his birthday because he was spoilt with delicious biscuits and a top-notch supper.
Magopane, from Daveyton, has worked for Kids Haven for three years.
