Pit bull rescued after being dumped

They have taken the pup to TAG where she will be cared for until she finds her 'fur-ever' home.

Four days of patience and gentle luring have led to the rescue of a pit bull terrier pup from a mealie field in Petit.

According to Annie Jungmann of The Animal Guardians (TAG), someone dropped off the five-month-old pup next to the road, near the Petit Airfield, on April 30.

“A fellow motorist saw a woman, driving a white bakkie, leaving the animal next to the road and immediately contacted us,” she said.

“Given the strange new environment, the scared and disorientated dog ran into the field.

“We were unable to catch her, but set up a feeding station to lure her out of hiding.”

Waiting patiently at the feeding station, Katie O’Neill finally managed to gain the pups’ trust.

Following two hours of hand feeding, the TAG team was able to catch her and return her to their facility.

“Despite being covered in ticks, initial examinations indicated the pup was in good health and would slowly be integrated with our other furry residents,” said Jungmann.

“It overjoyed us that this abandonment has a happy ending and that the dog is safe with people that truly care about her well-being.”

She reiterated that although most animal rescue organisations and shelters remain overwhelmed with the influx of unwanted, abused and neglected animals, abandonment of this nature is cruel and inhumane.

“We must always give careful consideration before bringing a pet into your home,” she said.

“Having a pet means a commitment to love and care for them for the rest of their lives. We cannot dump them when the cute puppy phase has passed.”
