Benoni taxi drivers accused of attacking ‘drug dealer’ to appear in court

The accused face three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and one count of kidnapping.

Four taxi drivers who allegedly assaulted a suspected drug dealer from Barcelona, Etwatwa, are set to reappear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on May 15.

The matter was postponed for further investigation after their previous court appearance on April 17.

The Benoni Taxi Association members face three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and one count of kidnapping.

All the accused are on bail of either R5 000 or R2 000.

The complainant was attacked in January during a clean-up operation that targeted drug dealers and users in Benoni and Daveyton.

Videos and photos of the incident made the rounds on social media.

The four taxi drivers told the police they found the complainant with ammunition and drugs when they arrived at the Benoni Taxi Rank after receiving a tip-off about a man being assaulted.
