Man who picked up dog in Farrarmere says it ran away

The dog escaped from a property in Douglas Avenue.

A Farrarmere family is offering a R3 000 reward for the return of their 11-year-old Jack Russell named Jill, who was captured on CCTV being picked up by a man and taken to Homestead Dam on March 1.

The dog escaped from a property in Douglas Avenue and a neighbour’s CCTV showed it being picked up in that street by a black man wearing a blue beanie and blue overall-type jacket.

“He proceeded on foot to Homestead Dam and was seen in Umgeni Street by a lady who told him to take the dog to the SPCA. Instead, he took Jill to the dam as witnessed by two people,” said the owner, Mary Stevens.

“One of the witnesses said she saw the same man in Atlasville the next day and approached him, asking what he did with the dog. He replied that he stopped to give her water but she ran off.”

Mary hopes that if the man was truthful and Jill did run off at Homestead Dam, a Good Samaritan might have picked her up and is unaware her loving family are looking for her.

“While we don’t know the truth, we have heard of dogs being stolen and held for ransom or sold. This needs to be stopped,” she said.

“We hope all our efforts pay off and we find Jill,” Mary said.
