Help keep marathon route clean

The Benoni Northerns Marathon, sponsored by Kwikscaff, takes place on March 5 in Northmead and Rynfield.

The organisers are urging residents on the marathon route to leave their wheelie bins on their pavements for the runners to dispose of their litter.

The 42.2km marathon is a double-lapper of the 21.1km route through Northmead, Rynfield and the Ebotse Estate and Golf Course.

The race organiser, Kerry Webb, said the community’s support blew the Benoni Northerns away during the BNAC Night Race in October.

The residents along the route put lights in their driveways, glow sticks and paint around the potholes on the roads and also came out to cheer the runners and walkers.

“We would love the same support for the BNAC Marathon to show the thousands of runners who use our marathon to qualify for the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon how amazing Benonians are.

“If your home is along the route, please come out, wave and cheer and support the runners.

“Also, the marathon is a clean event. We will have sufficient bins at the water stations, located every three kilometres along the route.

“Residents are encouraged to leave bins outside for runners to leave their used water sachets. Let’s show them how great our community is,” she said.

The route starts and finishes at the Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

The gun for the 42.2km and 21.1km will go off at 06:00. The 10km and 5km will follow at 06:10 and the race walking league starts at 06:15.

Late entries will be available at the venue on March 1 from 15:00 to 19:00 and March 4 from 9:00 to 17:00.
