EMPD uncover explosives in Daveyton

A tip-off led to the arrest of the two foreign nationals

Members of the EMPD Etwatwa Precinct have seized explosives from a home on DM Mthumunye Street, Ext Six, Daveyton, on December 13.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, officers received information regarding a residence which is suspected to be used by criminals for harbouring stolen items, including explosives.

“Upon arrival, officers found a sack containing detonating fuses on the doorstep,” said Thepa.

“Further investigations led to the recovery of 15 detonating fuses, 113 blasting cartridges and 21 wiring blasting cartridges.”

Explosives found during the raid of the home.

A 34-year-old female occupant was interrogated after which she agreed to contact a 40-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for the explosives.

“Upon arrival, he offered officers R6 000 in an attempt to avoid arrest,” said Thepa.

“Both foreign nationals were arrested and charged with being in possession of explosives and bribery. All the necessary stakeholders were summoned to the crime scene to safely remove the items and the duo is expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court soon.”
