EMPD tip of the week

Drivers are advised to take extra care, as wet or flooded roads may present a serious risk to motorists

With the rainy summer season upon us, the EMPD has shared the following tips to help you stay safe while driving in heavy rain.

“These wet roads mean that tyres may only have half as much grip on the surface as on dry roads. So, motorists need to adapt their driving to suit these different conditions,” said EMPD media liaison officer Constable Joy Mdluli.

Wet weather driving tips
Motorists are urged to adopt a proactive approach on the roads in rainy days:
• Maintain longer following distance between your car and the car in front of you as your car needs more distance to stop on wet roads.

• Lower or adjust your speed, especially when entering corners; and avoid abrupt braking as this may result in skidding.

• Check that your brakes are in good working condition.

• Have a firm grip on the steering wheel.

• Switch your headlights on in poor visibility; and always maintain focus on the road ahead.

• Check that you have sufficient tread on your tyres, as tyres with reduced tread depth may cause the vehicle to skid on wet roads.

• Check that your wiper blades are in good condition to ensure maximum visibility.

“Crashes in wet conditions are common, and everyone should make a conscious effort to drive safely.

“Always wear your safety belt and ensure all children and passengers are also strapped in. Now is not the time to take any chances with safety.”
