Northmead resident takes Mrs Johannesburg crown

The local business woman hopes to use her title to reach those in need

Hailing from Middelburg, Mpumalanga, Mathilda Muir and her family relocated to Benoni in June.

They switched their lives into high gear to pursue a life in the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Dreaming of owning a coffee shop, the Northmead resident took the leap and opened her eclectic shop, where scrumptious delights are always at the order of the day.

“Helping others is a lifelong passion and it is for this reason that I entered the Mrs Johannesburg pageant to align myself with like-minded women, within my new community,” said Mathilda.

“This is more than just another pageant looking for a pretty face. Seeking donations and sponsors for my participation as well as my outreach projects was no easy feat.

“I must admit that reaching the finals and ultimately winning the crown did awaken the spirit of a younger version of myself who dreamt about being queen with a crown to accompany the title.”

One of the pageant’s key projects is the Starfish Places of Safety in Magaliesburg. Funds raised by participants as well as the title holder is being used to renovate a house that will become a place of safety for children.

Muir will also be representing the Rolemodels Foundation, which was founded in 2009 by pageant directors Alwyn and Juanita Smit.

“The foundation is aimed at helping people in any way possible,” she said.

“During my reign, I will be canvassing for donations and sponsorship by collecting non-perishable food, stationery, cleaning products, building materials and anything else that may arise.”

Mathilda is also running the Poverty Sucks Lollipops fundraising campaign to raise funds for the foundation.

“I hope to put my title into action by making a tangible difference in the community. I’m proud but humbled by the prospects.”
