The Benoni Northerns Athletics Club is urging local businesses, residents and schools to enter the club’s night race on October 26.

According to the club’s Kerry Webb, the race will also be in honour of Benoni Northerns Sports Club’s 50th anniversary.

“We want to encourage local companies and schools to enter teams. We have a prize for the school with the most online entries in the 5km and a trophy for the corporate with the most entries.

“We would like to see more people from the community taking part, in the celebration of our main club’s 50th anniversary,” she said.

The event, which first ran in the mid-1980s, has grown in popularity. It will take place on the streets of Northmead and Rynfield.

It attracted a total of 2 543 runners in 2019 – 510 runners finished the 10km event, 215 crossed the line in the 15km race while the 5km fun run saw a crowd of 1 818 runners at the finish line.

This year runners can take part in the 5km and 10km events.

According to Webb, the event is community-inspired and people of all ages and fitness levels are welcome to participate.

“The BNAC night race sponsored by Jan L Jordaan Attorneys is a much-loved community event that invites runners and walkers of all fitness levels to enjoy a spirited race through the streets of Benoni, with festive water stops, music and lights along the way.

Bruce Morrison and Associates has entered 50 people.

“We are also encouraging the different Northerns sub-sections to enter. It’s a fun-filled evening for the whole family to enjoy,” added Webb.

Online entries close on October 19.

Late entries will be taken at Jan Jordaan Attorneys on October 24 and 25 from 09:00 to 15:00 and on race day from 09:00 at Benoni Northerns sports grounds in Northmead.
