SAPS steps up patrols in light of increased break-ins

Increase in house breakings and robberies recorded

The Benoni Police Station, Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and Fidelity ADT are stepping up patrols in Rynfield, Northmead, Farrarmere and Bonaero Park following an increase in residential break-ins.

According to Renee Basson, Fidelity ADT community manager, 16 incidents have been reported from September 5.

“A large majority of these have been house robberies where suspects have cut the electric fence or attempted to derail the gate motor in order to gain access to the property,” said Basson.

Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS confirmed that patrols by police officers as well as members of BFS have been stepped up, thus increasing the police’s presence in the affected areas.

“We believe that the suspects are armed and therefore dangerous,” said Sekele.

“There are reports that an elderly couple was assaulted during an alleged armed robbery. Investigations into the matter are underway.”

“We urge residents to remain vigilant at all times, ensure that all security measures in and around their homes are in working order and to report any suspicious movements to the police or independent security companies.”

Bason has the following safety tips:
• Stay informed about crime trends in your neighbourhood
Community WhatsApp groups, regular alerts from security companies and local newspapers and social media sites are good sources of up-to-date information.

• Stay alert
Keep an eye out for suspicious activity or people and remember to trust your gut when you feel something is not right.

• Do not grant strangers access to your property
Criminals often pose as service providers, delivery services or council workers to gain access.

• Have an emergency plan
Formulate a plan with your family so that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency, whether it is fire, medical or a home invasion. Planning will not only save time but can also help you keep a clear head in a traumatic situation.

• Don’t put valuables on display
Avoid attracting attention by flaunting expensive items in public.

• Always activate your home security systems
Set your alarm every time you leave home and ensure that you test your alarm as well as the panic buttons regularly.
