Indians duo proud to represent country

The tournament took place from July 29 until August 7.

Joshua Cook and Tatum were proud to don the green and gold and represent the country at the WBSC U12 World Cup in Taiwan.

Despite results not going their way, the Benoni Indians duo revealed that this experience will help them as they seek to carve a career in the sport.

South Africa faced countries like Mexico, Panama and powerhouse Chinese Taipei, finishing winless. Despite this, the players’ positivity and calmness in challenging times warmed the hearts of their opponents and spectators in the Asia Pacific Main Stadium.

“It was amazing to be in a tournament where everybody was excited about baseball. I loved being able to be a part of it. We had so much fun as a team and met many different people,” said Joshua.

Tatum said despite the country’s status as a non-baseball nation, it left an indelible mark and countries should expect an improved South Africa at next year’s showpiece.

“It was tough facing those countries that are big in baseball. It didn’t matter because we had fun and enjoyed the experience, knowing that next year there is a new crop of players that will make the country proud.

Brothers in arms. Tatum White and a team celebrate.

“South Africa isn’t that big in baseball and we knew we weren’t going to be in those top positions. We knew we were going to try and give it our best no matter what the results may be. We came back with smiles on our faces,” he said.

Joshua added that as a team, they learnt the importance of unity and playing for the badge.

“We learned that we must play as a team and need to encourage each other when we are feeling down and defeated.”
