Three dead following N12 chase

The cyclist was struck as the assailants fled the scene

Two armed suspects and a cyclist were left dead during a dramatic chase on the N12 highway, past the Etwatwa off-ramp, Katboschfontein, on June 27.

According to Benoni Flying Squad spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, members of a vehicle tracking company were tracking a vehicle when they witnessed a silver Toyota Corolla with five occupants hijacking a truck.

“A chase ensued and members were able to bring the truck to a stop. A shoot-out ensued between officers and two of the suspects,” said Giblin.

“Both suspects were shot dead while a victim, a co-driver of the truck, was found unscathed in the truck.”

The Corolla continued to speed towards the R50 Delmas off-ramp where the vehicle collided with a cyclist resulting in the driver losing control and crashing into a nearby veld.

“The cyclist was declared dead on the scene while the three remaining suspects fled on foot. The driver, who is also the owner of the truck, had been forced into the Corolla and was found unharmed at the second crime scene.”

It is alleged that an undisclosed amount of money was stolen during the incident and two pistols, belonging to the suspects, were recovered.

The vehicle used during the hijacking had been reported as hijacked in Kempton Park.

“This stretch of road has become a high risk zone and despite being patrolled daily, we urge motorists to remain vigilant at all times,” said Giblin.

“We remain committed in supporting local police stations by maintaining a high level of visible policing.”
