#Northerns50years: Daniel family proud members of Northerns

“A big highlight in my Comrades career was to run with my wife on her first event and in return she ran with me for my tenth in 2019. Together we have 15 Comrades medals."

They say a family that prays together, stays together. But what about a family that loves a similar sport and is member of the same sports club?

Meet Marc Daniel, who has been a member of the Benoni Northerns Sport Club (BNSC) for over 10 years, serving as a marathoner and football coach.

Along with his wife, Robyn, and two children, they are members of the BNSC. They are an example that a family can support and be a member of the same team.

“I joined Northerns in 2010 to gain guidance, knowledge and experience to take on the 2010 Comrades Marathon,” he said.

Daniel coaches the Northerns football club’s U6 team where his son is also a player. Along with Robyn, they are members of the athletics section and they have created ever-lasting memories running in the Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) colours.

“A big highlight in my Comrades career was to run with my wife on her first event and in return, she ran with me for my tenth in 2019. Together we have 15 Comrades medals.

“This has come with its challenges while raising two incredible children and it would not have been possible without the support of our parents and friends.”

The 38-year-old has commended the club for its legion of experienced Comrades Marathon runners.

“We are fortunate to have enough Comrades-experienced runners than any other club in the country. Guidance and motivation have always been forthcoming to any runner, irrespective of their ability.

“It didn’t take long for me to realise that I had joined a family. Unfortunately our ‘extended family’ had to deal with grief as we have lost several members whom we miss a lot.”

Daniel and his family are at home at Northerns. Besides the clubhouse’s beverages always cold, he enjoys the club’s social side as well.

“The best thing is the club’s ability to bounce back from challenging times. This past weekend was a testament to this as we had over 170 runners completing the Edenvale half-marathon together – something we haven’t been able to do since the pandemic.

“I wish the BNSC a happy 50th. May the club continue to encourage, develop and guide more locals of all ages and throughout all eight sub-sections over the next 50 years.”
