#benoninortherns50years: ‘Club is my safehaven’

“The platform I’ve been given by the BNSC to serve my community and being actively involved in the lives of youngsters is a responsibility I cherish."

The Benoni Northerns Sport Club (BNSC) celebrates its golden anniversary this year. Over five decades, the club has continued to be the heartbeat of Benoni sport.

Being the thread that has held this community together, Benonians have created unforgettable memories that only they can share in great detail.

The City Times caught up with two women who have served the club with distinction over the years.

One is a die-hard rugby supporter who has been part of the club’s rugby section for years. The other’s passion lies in the development and growth of women’s cricket.

Magda Blignaut serves as the rugby section’s treasurer while Joline Smit is part of the cricket club.

Blignaut wished the club well and hopes to create more memories in the next 50 years.

“I love sport. When I met my husband 25 years ago, he was playing for Benoni. That’s how I got involved. It’s nice to see the old and young still taking to the field and playing the game that they love.

“I joined the club five years ago. I am the treasurer of the rugby club. I have been involved in rugby for more than 25 years. As Benoni rugby, we battled for playing fields so Northerns gave us an opportunity to join and become part of the club.

“Here’s to another 50 years. Keep up the good work. I hope to walk with you for many years to come,” Blignaut said.

Smit’s passion extends beyond the oval. She thanked the club for giving her a platform to serve her community.

“My journey started when I was 12. Sport was certainly more than a hobby. When life got tough, this was where I could express myself fully, in a safe environment.

“After a couple of years, I was introduced to Benoni Northerns women’s cricket where I was involved in the management of the team. I’ve served as captain and deputy chairperson.

“My relationship goes beyond cricket. It’s inspiring others and creating opportunities in a safe environment for not just adult players but children as well.

“The BNSC has given me the opportunity to live out my passion for cricket, hockey and rugby. They’ve made me feel welcome and at home. I’ve had the privilege of coaching boys’ cricket and rugby teams.

“My proudest moments are the warm hearts we touch through sport. The ability to create opportunities for youngsters and being able to make them smile when they finally achieve what they’ve been struggling with.

“The platform I’ve been given by the BNSC to serve my community and being actively involved in the lives of youngsters is a responsibility I cherish.

“I’m humbled and honoured to be a member. I can’t wait to see what the next 50 years bring.”
